In a tournament that had become known for the amount of goals being scored – it was a single goal that ended a 44-year drought for Spain. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres expertly moved around Philip Lahm to score in the 33rd minute giving Spain a 1-0 win over Germany in the Euro 2008 final.
It’s the first major championship for Spain since the 1964 European Championships that were held in Spain.
Despite the tight score, this was a match (and a tournament) that was dominated by the Spanish. Even in the final minutes, with Germany desperate for an equalizer, it was Spain who were still pushing forward on the attack.
And now that Spain has broken their hex in major championships and with the young talent in their squad, I think we can start calling them one of the favorites in 2010.
